In very general terms, there are 3 basic techniques employed. You must be agile enough to switch strategies quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time trouble seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your chances. The best areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point seperating them. Timing is important for an competent backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opposerto hit them in this case!
