In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main plans used. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is then in serious calamity because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opposer is getting their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
