Backgammon – 3 Main Techniques
In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 main strategies employed. You must be able to hop between techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might manage, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is then in serious dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have two or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
