Backgammon – 3 Main Strategies
In astonishingly simple terms, there are three general game plans employed. You must be able to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious dire straits considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
