Backgammon – 3 Basic Plans

In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main tactics used. You must be able to hop between tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time trouble since they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best places for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
