Backgammon – Three Basic Strategies
In astonishingly general terms, there are three general techniques employed. You need to be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The best areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
