In exceptionally general terms, there are three basic techniques used. You must be agile enough to switch techniques almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
